Navigating Perimenopause: My Interview with Dr. Jennifer Ashton

Updated: Feb 1

Menopause and perimenopause are not just medical terms; they are pivotal transitions in a woman's life that affect her physically, mentally, and emotionally. On my latest podcast episode, Dr. Jennifer Ashton shares her insights into these significant life stages, offering a fresh perspective on the changes women experience as we age.

Our society often portrays aging as a decline, but my conversation between Dr. Jen really reframes this narrative, highlighting the grace and empowerment that can come with growing older. I can't stress enough, the importance of having open, supportive dialogue about women's health, especially as it pertains to menopause and perimenopause. It is through this shared understanding and community that women can embrace this stage of life with confidence and profound clarity.

I loved this episode because we don't shy away from discussing the more intimate aspects of aging, such as sex after 50. We were able to address common concerns, including sexual pain, lubrication, and desire discrepancy, all of which I know will resonate with my listeners. We were also able to bring this conversation full circle, referring back to a recent article that I had the pleasure of contributing to in Dr. Jen's latest magazine.

We were also able to cover the topic of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) in the episode. Dr. Ashton dissected the variety of treatment options available, from pills and creams to patches and pellets, while debunking myths associated with HRT and breast cancer. Testosterone pellets, a controversial form of HRT, receive special attention as Dr. Jen and I shared our own personal and professional perspectives. We discussed the benefits and potential downsides of pellets, advocating for a tailored approach to hormone therapy. It's an important reminder that one size does not fit all when it comes to healthcare, and the individual nature of treatment plans must be respected.

This episode stands out to me, because of its honest exchange and personal anecdotes, which serve to remind us all that we are not alone in our experiences. The conversation is not just about the physical aspects of menopause but also its emotional and psychological impact. By acknowledging the complexity of this life stage, my hope is that you'll listen and be encouraged to be gentle with yourself and seek the support that you need. I see this episode as a treasure trove of wisdom and camaraderie for women navigating the waters of perimenopause and beyond. It offers companionship and understanding, inviting you to chart a course through the beauty and complexity of womanhood. The warmth and honesty in the discussion make it a must-listen for anyone seeking to understand more about the unspoken voyage of women's well-being.
